Book Study: Maximizing School Librarian Leadership

As part of the 2021-22 Emerging Leaders Cohort we will be discussing Judi Moreillon’s MAXIMIZING SCHOOL LIBRARIAN LEADERSHIP: BUILDING CONNETIONS FOR LEARING AND ADVOCACY; however, you do not need to be a member of the cohort to participate!  Simply grab your own copy and jump in! (You also don’t necessarily need a copy of the book to participate! The book will help you dig deeper.)

Before we get started, I want you to ask yourselves what is your WHY?  This is what my principal asked all of us at our first faculty meeting.  He was referencing the TEDtalk by Simon Sinek   - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZoJKF_VuA&feature=youtu.be. What is it that made you want to be a school librarian - What is your WHY? Keep that in mind as you begin to develop your leadership and library program.

In the preface and Introductions of the book, Moreillon discusses collaboration and building connections and partnerships as integral to our profession.  That we need to develop a systems thinking approach – that school librarians need to understand both a school building and district level view of the learning community.  Be thinking about the global school community as we begin this book study.

Questions for this round:

  1. Why did you choose to become a school librarian?
  2. For Emerging Leaders: What do you hope to learn from the Emerging Leaders Program?  For non-Emerging Leaders: What do you wish you had learned in library school?
